Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Hegel (1770-1831), early 19th century German philosopher who had a profound influence on the course of western philosophy and on many other aspects of modern western culture. The four moves that enable me to read Hegel as an early master of semiotics are grounded in a hermeneutical conception of how the work of art displaces the classical moment that is usually assumed to constitute the core of his aesthetic theory, which is often used to relegate his reflections on modern art to the periphery of his thought. Despite this, Danto’s best-known essay, “The End of Art,” continues to be cited more than it is understood. In 1951, Danto began teaching at Columbia University, earning his doctorate the next year.

    In an obituary for the New York Times, Ken Johnson described Arthur Danto (1924–2013) as “one of the most widely read art critics of the Postmodern era.” Danto, who was both a critic and a professor of philosophy, is celebrated for his accessible and affable prose. And if so, what are the implications for art history and art-making? He initially embarked on a career as an artist (much of his work is now part of the Wayne State University art collection) before pursuing an academic career in philosophy. Hegel’s ambuous attitude toward the development of art in the modern age complicates his contribution to aesthetics, which has been canonized as “classical” in the strong sense.

    My conclusion is that Hegel’s profound ambuity with regard to the classic is an indication that all was not well in his progressive historicism.
